It was a hot show: hot as hell inside the lower level of Stubb’s in Austin, Davy’s tea was hot, and of course the music was hot, with Davy burning up the strings and melting faces all night long.

Each time I listen to the recording of the show I am blown away all over again.

I think that audio recordings of live shows are where it’s at.

Good quality recordings of live shows are great for the artist in terms of viral marketing and great for the fans. Many artists embrace audience recordings and encourage the sharing of live recordings as long as they are shared for free. But there is always the risk that once the recordings are out there, someone could burn them to discs and start selling them on eBay or something. It is this risk that makes many artists hesitant to come right out and publicly state that they allow or even encourage taping of their live shows. And it is this risk that makes some artists come out against audience recordings all together.

Every time a pirate sells a show, the artists who preformed the show thinks twice about allowing audience recordings. Every time a pirate sells a show, it puts the tradition of sharing live music for free at risk.

If you enjoy these recordings and want the tradition to continue, then please support the artists by buying their albums, going to their shows, and reporting the illegal sale of taped shows whenever you see them.

Please, never pay for audience recordings.

Last night I saw Taylor Hicks at the Roxy in Los Angeles. (March 18, 2009)

I loved it. It was my favorite TH performance. He brought his A+++ game. Great music. It was the best vocals I’ve ever heard from him, and that’s saying something.

The crowd was pretty cool, the venue was cool, the band was great, and like I said, Taylor seriously BROUGHT IT.

And that encore…remember Taking It to the Streets? Remember how he just rocked that song out and we all shouted ‘HELL YES!’ at the end? Well, that’s how he rocked out My Sweet Lord. It was electric. I wish you could have seen it.

I can’t give much more of a recap because I am running on very little sleep and…I just can’t. I’m beat.

On a rainy November 3rd, I went to see Ray LaMontagne at Oakland’s beautiful Paramount Theatre. The night was full of anticipation and excitement both because of the historic election that was coming the next day, and because we were about to hear Ray sing. At quiet moments between songs, people in the crowd yelled out refereneces to Obama like “Change is coming!” and the song request “Jolene!” in about equal parts. It was a happy night.

The theater was beautiful. It was a beautiful show. We had beautiful seats. Ray was beautiful.

I don’t know what else to say, except that “Gossip in the Grain” is a great album, and if you get the chance to see Ray live I really hope you do. He casts a spell and you just fall in…

PS: for example, doesn’t ‘Meg White’ just mess with your head? It’s too fun to be Ray LaMontagne. He actually wrote a line that says “Baby, you’re the bomb”? No way. And it…sticks in your head. And my 16 year old son loves it and is working on designing his myspace page around it. Wouldn’t it be ironic and crazy if this little ditty became a hit for Ray LaMontagne?

And doesn’t ‘Burn’ just kill you at the end?

And isn’t Winter Birds just stunningly beautiful?

Friday October 3, 2008 I went to see Back Door Slam. The venue was The Hotel Utah, and I had never been there before.

The place turned out to be nothing but a little bar with a stage and two tiny audience spaces: one on the floor and one on a balcony above the stage. Both audience spaces were hardly larger than the stage itself. The guy at the door said that the place sold out…120 tickets.

Being in that place was more like being on the stage with the band than being in the audience. Very cool.

They opened with Outside Woman Blues. There was a problem with the amp and another had to be brought in before the next song. And that’s kinda how the night went: It was a night of blistering music in a small space with some technical problems that, to me anyway, just lent more charm to the evening.

I also have to say that I have never met a nicer bunch of people than the fans I met at this show.

And the show was great. I will never forget the blur of Davy’s hands on the guitar that night… it was something else. Amazing. The real deal.

This was my favorite Lyle Lovett and his Large Band concert ever. The large band wasn’t quite as large this time around, and you know, I liked it better. I guess it’s true …size isn’t everything!

He started right on time. He was wearing a nice cream colored suit, dressed for church, as was everyone on the stage.

I dropped into my seat about ten seconds before the first notes of his first song…

Church – A great song with a gospel sound, but not a gospel song. I thought to myself how I wish he would do some gospel type music in his show. I love it, but when I’ve seen Lyle in concert previously, he didn’t perform as much of it as I would like. Little did I know I would get my wish in spades later in the evening. Anyway, with Church opening the night, everybody had a smile on their face.

No Big Deal - This song features the type of vocals and lyrics that first hooked me on Lyle.

Then came some banter (“Make a note: pick up some shorts”) – hahahaha. The audience says he is hilarious.

Cowboy Man – Texas swing with a classical cello intro. You don’t hear that every day.

Penguins – I’ve always liked this song, but thank goodness in the banter he said he wrote this song to make fun of someone who had penguins all over their home. Now I can enjoy it without the confusion that always troubled me.

Give Back My Heart

Long Tall Texan - This one I have a real soft spot for. I had never heard him sing it live before this, but I’ve worn out my mp3 of this song. I love how he says, “Oh lor,’ oh lor’ …Is that your hat?” I was pretty happy he sang it. Too bad about the feedback.

Don’t Cry a Tear

More banter – Lyle says that growing up Lutheran and going to Lutheran school influenced his taste in music. Just for fun, here’s some banter:

South Texas Girl - a beautiful, amazing song. A song that happens to mention Sid Lasher. When Lyle was growing up, Sid Lasher was a TV weather man in Texas who conveyed extra facts and information about the towns on his weather maps. Kinda like I am telling you about Sid Lasher in the middle of a concert recap.

You Were Always There - haunting, beautiful, heartbreaking song that I dedicated a post to a few months ago.

Keep it in Your Pantry - Funny bluegrass song. Aways a hit! Not on an album yet, I don’t think.

Up in Indiana - love this bluegrass tune

Happy Birthday, Mitch – aww! Lyle sings Happy Birthday to Mitch Watkins (guitar).
If I Had a Boat - crowd favorite. Poetic. Lots of people in the audience know the words and you can hear some singing along.

That’s Right, You’re Not From Texas - crowd favorite. Lots of fun.

Ok… if you’ve ever seen Lyle perform you know that compared to some other artists, he doesn’t move around a bunch. It is as if he won’t allow a little bits of music to take detours to his fingers to snap, or his legs to dance or his body to sway. Instead he stays still and channels it all through is voice.

But over the years, I’ve started to notice all the little movements he does make. For example, there were a few points in the show that were really magical, and one of them I could see coming before it happened, because of the way he moved…

By the way he put his guitar down. By the way he stepped to the mic. By the way he tensed up and held his hands, by the way he set his feet…oh lord I thought…this is going to be good. And it was. And it kept getting better and better. And better.
