So how was the festival?! Which artist/group did you enjoy the most?

tandjam, After reading your blog for some time now, I’ve decided that next year my husband and I must attend at least one music festival. Hopefully, Bonnaroo.

    Eagerly awaiting your recap…

I can’t wait for the Outside Lands recap, whenever you get to it tandjam. Are you planning to go see John Butler and G Love at the other festival this weekend (sorry I forgot the name)?

Moonshadow — I’d love to go to Bonaroo myself, or the Christmas Jam. I just came back from the Newport Jazz Festival and had a wonderful time out in the sun for two days basking in great music.

Linda, I hadn’t heard of Christmas Jam until I read your post. I googled it and it sounds like a blast. Asheville is absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful spot for a festival. Who all did you get to see in Newport?

tandjam- Looking forward to your recap. I’m especially curious about Ben Harper.

Moonshadow — I’ve always been interested in the Christmas Jam after Taylor Hicks sat in with some of the musicians in December of 2006. It’s been going on for a long time now and Warren Haynes pulls together some incredible musicians. Actually, the highlight of 2006 for me is the swinging version of “All Along the Watchtower” with Warren, Dave Matthews, and Branford Marsalis. Sweet!

The Newport Jazz Festival was outrageously good. Two related acts — Lettuce and SoulLive, along with special guest Fred Wesley (trombonist for James Brown) stole the show on Saturday and Sunday respectively. I found myself up dancing and screaming “Archie Bell and the fucking Drellllllllls” when SoulLive closed with Tighten Up….whew. That’s how concerts should be, a celebration of the performers and the audience just groovin together on the cool vibe that is music.

Other fantastic acts were Herbie Hancock, Aretha Franklin, Sonny Rollins, George Wein and the Newport All-Starts, Lionel Luecke, Christian Scott, Ledisi, and my favorite new(er) artist, Esperanza Spalding. I knew the meaning of pure joy when I sat out there under a tent on a bright sunny day listening to her scat and play the scatting notes at the same time on the upright bass. Magical! 🙂

Linda, I was wondering how your trip to the Jazz Festival was. Thanks for posting about it. Esperanza Spalding is very new to me. Such a gifted artist…
